Evergreen oak

Quercus ilex

Robust tree with a dense crown, which forms holm oak groves, the most characteristic Mediterranean forests. It can grow up to 20 meters in height.

Its intense dark green leaves are adapted to withstand summer droughts. Its fruit is the acorn, a good food for many  animals in the forest.

The hardness of its wood made it highly valued for making tools, handles and wagon wheels. Also as fuel in the form of firewood and charcoal.
